Archer Aviation and the U.S. Air Force have signed contracts worth up to $142 million for the development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air vehicles. Archer will create up to six of these vehicles for the military's needs. They'll also assist with pilot training, maintenance, and other support.
Archer revealed the Midnight air cab prototype in May, which is almost ready for flight testing and certification in 2024. The quick progress impressed the military, boosting their confidence in Archer's potential. The company aims to start producing and flying the air cab by 2025.
Archer has been working with the U.S. Department of Defense since 2021 to evaluate eVTOL tech for military use. The Midnight model's electric propulsion and low noise are especially useful for special operations.
This innovative aircraft can improve various missions, like transport, rescue, and more, thanks to its quiet and cost-effective features. Archer's government services advisory board, including retired military personnel, was established before the Air Force contract.
The pre-final Midnight air cab fits a pilot and four passengers, with testing in unmanned mode ongoing. It can travel up to 161 km at 241 km/h when fully charged, and it's around 100 times quieter than a regular helicopter. The engines pivot during horizontal flight for less resistance.
